Being new to the area and not knowing of any local dentists, I asked some of my co-workers who they would recommend. The name that came up more than any others was Dr. Ellicson. So I made an appointment and have to say, my co-workers were so right about him. I found him professional, friendly, knowledgable and most of all he listened to me, and what I wanted to do and not to do, along with what I expected and hoped to accomplish. I wish I had Dr. Ellicson years ago, as my former intense fear of dentists would have never developed. His staff was incredible also, pleasant and help put you at ease from the time you enter the office. Thanks to Dr. Ellicson, I can now smile and laugh without having to feel the need to hide my teeth. I think I now smile more than I need to just to show my teeth. I plan to stay with him as long as I have teeth, and with him as my dentist, that should be forever.

Our long hot Scottsdale summer is here. The kids are out of school. Gas prices have skyrocketed. The economy is in the tank. We need to make our hard earned dollars go as far as possible. Nearly everyone in the Scottsdale Phoenix metropolitan area has Dental Insurance. Dental benefits run on a calendar year, January 1st through December 31st.
In any given year I have a large number of existing and new dental patients arriving at my office in November or early December and requesting to have all their dental needs taken care of before the end of the calendar year. Their motivation is to utilize their dental insurance benefits that will expire December 31st. Needless to say this is a bit late. The time to start or finish treatment should be planned ahead and accomplished in an ordered and timely manner.
The summer months lend themselves to preplanning and organizing your dental treatment needs. This way you will have a comfortable time period to utilize your dental insurance benefits and finish any necessary treatment before the end of the calendar year. There are truly financially unfortunate patients that have dental insurance, need treatment and for any number of reasons ignore that need. They lose anywhere from $750 to $1,500 worth of dental insurance benefits per year. This amounts to tossing that money out the window during a monsoon! They have been paying for it all year and now lose it. Granted there are individuals that are blessed and don’t need any dental treatment. However, It is a documented fact by the American Dental Association, The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the Academy of General Dentistry and numerous other dental organizations that the average adult should receive two to three cleaning and check-ups during a twelve month period.
Many adults in this generation have quite a bit of dental treatment. All the restorations and gum therapy they have had over the years needs to be maintained and cared for. The advances and technology in dentistry has progressed at a geometric rate in the last decade. These advances allow quality dentistry to last a lifetime for you. Proper care and preventive therapies improve your health, well-being and self image. It is now a recognized fact that poor dental health can lead to a plethora of systemic diseases. The most daunting one is increased risk of cardiac disease and heart attack. The advent of digital radiography {Dexis, Kodak, Shick, Gendex to name a few} fiber optic curing lights {Kinetic, 3M, Adec, and others}, site specific gum antibiotics {Arestin}, and improved dental hand pieces { Kavo America, Star Dental, Medidenta and others} have all added to the marvelous technological revolution of today’s dentistry.

I was just writing to thank you again for the great job you did with bonding my teeth and at the same time changing my life. My mother called your office a few months ago and explained my situation to C. J. who said she would personally tell you my situation and let us know if anything could be done before coming in for an appointment. We then came to your office for a consultation and you very enthusiastically approached my situation and took the challenge to bond and basically “fix” my the appearance of my teeth without the need of braces and surgery. I was VERY excited and couldn’t wait for the procedure. The procedure went over better than I ever expected. It was unbelievable. You basically fixed any kind of insecurity I have about my teeth. Overall, I just wanted to thank you so much. I don’t know HOW you did it, but you did it very well and I promise I will get the most out of my new confidence as I can.
Thank You, Dr. Ellicson!

Since I was a child I have feared dentists. Over the years I have allowed my teeth to get worse because of this fear. I met Dr. Ellicson at a Chamber of Commerce event and told him of my fear. He told me with the advancement in technology along with his professionalism I had nothing to fear. I finally got enough courage to make an appointment and needless to say I had a lot of work that needed to be done. Dr. Ellicson made it easy for me, there was not any pain. I had to get wisdom teeth removed and Dr. Ellicson explained everything that needed to be done, put together a timeline and worked on a budget with me. I was so impressed that I now go regularly for cleaning as well and will have perfect teeth within the next year. My wife is now also a client and her teeth look beautiful. We would not go to any other cosmetic dentist after working with Dr. Ellicson. We tried others and they do not compare.

Poor dental health in baby boomers can mean more than an unattractive smile. It can cause periodontal disease, a serious oral infection that in turn can lead to cardiovascular disease, stroke, respiratory illness, diabetes and a host of other serious illnesses. People who have gum disease are more than twice as likely to have cardiovascular disease than people with healthy mouth tissue, according to the American Academy of Periodontology. But nearly 80 percent of adults have some form of periodontitis, a chronic bacterial infection of the gums and bone surrounding the teeth, according to the National Institutes of Health. The condition begins when bacteria in plaque - the sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on the teeth - cause gums to become inflamed. The condition is painless and may not have any symptoms until it’s advanced. Gum tissue should fit snugly around the tooth, like a turtleneck sweater. If the gums have receded, it creates “pockets” around the teeth, which can fill with bacteria. Red puffy gums are a sign of gingivitis, the mildest, most treatable form of periodontal disease. “But by the time gums recede, it means you’ve already lost some jawbone,” says Roger Cooper, a periodontist who teaches at the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health in Mesa. Periodontitis is unrelated to cavities, which are caused by different bacteria. Systemwide disease There are several theories about the link between gum disease and cardiovascular disease. When gum disease is left untreated, it causes chronic inflammation throughout the body, Cooper says, which may cause arteries to swell. Another possibility is that bacteria in the mouth get into the bloodstream, induce blood to coagulate more quickly and make the lining of arteries firmer, both of which make conditions ideal for plaque to form in arteries. Bacterial respiratory infections are thought to be acquired by inhaling fine droplets of bacteria-laden saliva into the lungs. This can cause infections or worsen existing lung conditions. The inflammation and systemic distress caused by periodontitis also is linked to increased incidence of stroke, pre-eclampsia, low-birthweight babies, diabetes, pancreatic cancer, oral cancer and complications in organ transplant survival. Treating gum disease Everyone gets sticky mouth plaque. Daily brushing and flossing are two important ways to get rid it. But there’s another crucial step.
“You can’t do it alone - you need professional cleaning,” Cooper says. “It’s best to do it every three to four months because that’s how long it takes for colonized bacteria to start destroying bone.” Often, patients don’t even know they have gum disease. After diagnosis, the first treatment is scaling and planing, in which all of the tartar is scrupulously removed from above and below the gum line. This is the most important step, says Edward Mazer, a periodontist with Southwest Dental Group in Tempe. “Even when the gums are very inflamed and swollen and bloody, patients respond incredibly well to initial therapy because the inflammation is taken away. The body is great - it will heal,” he says. After scaling and planing, patients must commit to a careful regimen of brushing, flossing and using over-the-counter non-alcohol rinses. Mazer also discusses proper nutrition and stress control, both of which are key to oral health. Then Mazer will assess whether surgery to repair the tissue is necessary. “If they come back and their home care is not 100 percent, then I don’t do surgery,” he says. “You might think what I do is more important than what they do, but in long-term respects, it’s not. Without their commitment, I’ll have to redo the surgery and people lose their teeth five years later.” Mazer says that when the gum pockets are 5 to 7 millimeters, he will perform a procedure called osseous surgery, in which he recontours the bone to reduce the pockets. After treatment, it’s crucial that patients follow up with cleanings in the office every three to four months, Mazer says. Factors in gum disease Periodontal disease is caused when bacteria in the gums multiply and create a bodywide inflammation, which can lead to tooth loss. Skipping professional cleanings at the dentist’s office can lead to gum disease. Several other factors also can contribute to the proliferation of bacteria in the mouth:
Smoking: Smoking cigarettes or pipes or using oral tobacco slows the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the gum tissue and delays healing, meaning even a small amount of bacteria can quickly become periodontal disease. Smokers are more likely to have severe disease than non-smokers, and they are more susceptible to treatment failure. Genetics: Up to 30 percent of the population may be genetically more susceptible to gum disease. Also, some inherited conditions, such as Down syndrome and Marfan syndrome, are linked to higher likelihood of periodontal disease. Stress: People who have high levels of chronic stress produce more of the hormone cortisol, which has been linked to gum disease. Medications: One reason baby boomers are more susceptible to gum disease than younger people is that they are more likely to take medication. Hundreds of common medications, including antihistamines, diuretics, painkillers, blood-pressure medications and antidepressants, can cause side effects such as dry mouth, soft-tissue changes and overgrowth of gum tissue. Dry mouth leaves the mouth without enough saliva to wash away food and neutralize plaque, increasing the chances for tooth decay and periodontal disease.
Diabetes: Periodontal disease and diabetes make an unfortunate circle. Diabetics have a higher risk for developing infections, including periodontal diseases. An infection, such as periodontal disease, can
impair the ability to process or utilize insulin, which may cause diabetes to be more difficult to control and infection to be more severe. Poor nutrition: People who consume less than the recommended
dietary allowance for calcium and vitamin C have slightly higher rates of periodontal disease. This is probably related to the tissue’s ability to heal itself. Source: American Academy of Periodontology,

“You have got such beautiful teeth,” is the compliment I get most. People might compliment you in a different fashion with various motivations, but this one is the most common and genuine one I get. “They are so white, gleaming—just perfect,” and I always respond, with a huge smile of course, that “I am just lucky, thank you.” But, I leave out that I’m lucky to have the best dentist, my honored Dr. Ellicson!

I am often asked by out of town patients friends how to find the right dentist to restore their smiles and what results to look for. Here is my response:
I would suggest that you first review the credentials of several dentists you may be considering, then call their offices and schedule a consultation. At that time, you can meet the doctor, look at his or her before-and-after pictures and ask about their post-graduate training; there is a difference between taking a cosmetic course and being an accredited member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Go over a treatment plan with the doctor, and then you can decide if you feel comfortable and assured enough to have him perform the work.
I believe in more than just simply fixing teeth. It is extremely important for the smile and the patients facial structure to be in total alignment and harmony with each other. Fixing a patient’s bite can rejuvenate the face. My goal is always to create stunning, one-of-a-kind working smiles.
As we age, our teeth wear down, discolor, crowd and chip. As facial muscles weaken, our lips hang lower and our smile begins to droop. A smile lift brightens the smile, straightens the teeth and builds a bigger smile that will take years off a person’s appearance and increase their self-esteem and confidence.
If you would like more information about this please contact Dr. Ellicson at frontdesk@drellicson.com or call 480-585-5215.

I was concerned about the appearance of my front teeth. My bottom front teeth were worn down and damaged due to grinding. I knew that if I didn’t do something about it, they would eventually chip, and could require root canal therapy. My bite was off as well, since the thickness of my front upper teeth did not allow clearance for my lower teeth. This resulted in my back teeth not being able to make contact properly.
Dr. Ellicson corrected my bite and now it feels more even. I also had decided to have 10 porcelain veneers placed on my top teeth and six on the bottom to improve the appearance of my smile.
Dr. Ellicson spent the extra time that was needed to make sure my final result would be everything I hoped it would be. I now have a bright, white smile with a perfect bite and perfect-looking teeth. This was one of the best investments I’ve made in myself.”

I was self-conscious about my smile because my front teeth were crooked. In my profession it is mandatory to have a perfect smile to advance my career. I met with Dr. Ellicson and we decided 12 all-porcelain veneers placed on my upper teeth would improve the appearance of my smile.
I get so many compliments about my smile now. My agent constantly tells me how pretty my smile is and how much it has improved my self confidence. I am so glad that I finally made this decision. Now, when I look at my smile in the mirror or see my photos I feel awesome!”

“As I went through medical school and then became a mom, I didn’t really notice that my teeth had become worn down and had gotten smaller. I had really nice teeth when I was younger. My teeth were still healthy and the decision to restore my teeth was not just made for cosmetic reasons but also addressed needs that were functional. I just didn’t think I could take the risk any longer of losing more of the enamel on my teeth.
I felt so good about how my new smile looked that I actually lost weight! I feel so much better now, and people notice.”
I decided to have eight all-porcelain veneers placed. I wish now that I would have gotten 10, and I am saving up for the last two.

“In 1989, I had four veneers placed on my upper teeth. After 18 years, I realized that their appearance had changed and I had become afraid to smile. I decided to replace my old veneers with six new porcelain veneers.
The technology has advanced so dramatically in what can be done to improve a person’s smile that I flew from San Diego to Scottsdale to have Dr. Ellicson do this for me.
“First I had my teeth whitened to have the new veneers match my natural teeth. When Dr. Ellicson designed my new veneers, he made them longer, and took time to give them more detail and shaping to complement and balance my total smile line.
“My smile is now complete. My teeth are more aligned and natural-looking. Best of all, I’m not embarrassed about my smile now, and I find myself smiling more.”

Words cannot express how grateful I am to you. I look in the mirror everyday and see a new, better, and happier person and it’s all thanks to you. You have not only changed my smile, you have transformed my outlook on life. I have never been happier or more confident than I am right now–I feel like I can conquer the world. With the work you have done to re-create my smile, you have created a new me. I can finally, after all these years, be myself. I can finally show everyone the real Lisa–the one who loves to smile at all those I come across, the one who loves to laugh out loud at a good joke–because of you, I no longer have to hide my smile and cover my mouth. At last, I feel at ease around other people, but more importantly, with myself. Dr. Ellicson, you are truly a miracle worker, to say the least. I thank you and all of your staff for their kindness and their ability to keep me at ease when I was nervous. Since you all have come into my life, I cannot stop smiling! To everyone contemplating coming in for a consultation, know this: You are dealing with the greatest hands and most wonderful cosmetic dentist ever! Do not be nervous, and know that this is the best thing you can EVER do for yourself. You will not only leave his office with a gorgeous smile, but you will become someone you never thought you could be. I am writing to thank Dr. Ellicson for the great job he has done for me. People say that looks don’t necessarily change your life, that may be true, but let’s not forget the fact that people often judge you by appearance, especially on making first impressions. When you’re trying to land that new job, or maybe even a date–just about anything in life–looking good makes you feel more comfortable and more willing to take the pressure that life has put on us. A smile is the Queen of good looks, or like the crown that tops a King’s head. I cannot count the number of times I walked by a nice girl or a good friend and thought to myself, “I wish I could give her the most beautiful smile in the world”…if I had one. Now, I do! Thank you for everything!

After years of small, oddly shaped teeth, I had my top teeth bonded by Dr. Ellicson. The results are outstanding and quite possibly the best thing I have ever done for myself! The three hour procedure was entirely painless and I continue to get endless compliments from family and friends. The other day, a cashier asked me if I wore braces for years to get my teeth this straight! I never had braces and the kudos belong entirely to Dr. Ellicson! I found Dr. Ellicson and his entire staff to be professional, kind, and polite. For those people that are considering cosmetic dentistry, I urge you to make an appointment to meet with Dr. Ellicson to discuss your treatment plan. Dear Dr.Ellicson
It’s not easy to improve perfection but you’ve certainly more than succeeded when you re-did my veneers. The difference between them and the old ones is as striking as the difference between my old veneers and my original teeth. Thanks to you, I now have the perfect smile I always wanted. Please give my regards to your courteous, professional staff. I was always treated with the outmost kindness and attention and, from the first visit in your office, it was clear to me that both you and your personnel treat your patients as individual people, not cases.
